Desert Rose

A desert rose is a form of gypsum with sand inclusions.  The “petals” are crystals formed along the mineral’s cleavage planes.  This rosette crystal formation tends to form in arid sandy conditions such as the evaporation of a shallow salt basin.  The white edges are formed by freezing the specimens.  Most desert roses come from Mexico, but are also found worldwide.
